Joe Singh is a main character in Ginny & Georgia. He is a 31-year-old man who lives in Wellsbury, Massachusetts and the owner of the Blue Farm Cafe. He is portrayed by Raymond Ablack.
History[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Joe’s past. He grew up in Wellsbury, Massachusetts, he has an older sister named Sasha, and his mom is the reason why he loves to cook.
When Joe was on a school trip en route to the next stop, Fort Jackson, the bus made a quick stop at a bus station in Georgia. Upon getting a school lunch and sitting down at a table, he sees a girl with a backpack standing alone and invites her to sit with him. The girl turns out to be Georgia. Joe and Georgia have a conversation about his school trip and his connection to Wellsbury, among other things, such as Joe's desire to have a farm and Georgia's lifelong dream of owning a horse named Milkshake. When Joe has to get back on the bus, he lets Georgia keep his Ray-Ban sunglasses, and Georgia tells him that she’ll look Joe up if she’s ever in Wellsbury. Georgia always kept those sunglasses, and Joe always remembered their interaction.
When Joe returned to Wellsbury High from his school trip, he spoke with his friend from his school about the trip, what had happened to his Ray-Bans, and offered them test answers he stole/photocopied from the main office. However, Joe later got shoved by a bully. Joe decides to stand up for himself and hits the bully in the face, but afterwards gets hit back way harder to the point he’s lying on the floor. In another flashback, it is alluded that Joe isn't as nice as he seems when he breaks into his bully's locker, plants the test answers on him and gets him in trouble.
Throughout the Series[]
Season 1[]
Joe first appears when walking up to Georgia, who instantly calls him by his first name, which confuses Joe at first until he realizes it’s his name tag. When Paul enters the restaurant, he tells Georgia that Joe has his own farm, which impresses Georgia. Georgia helps promote Joe’s Blue Farm business at the school evening in front of the people of Wellsbury.
After catching Ginny stealing, Georgia decides to take her to Blue Farm, and when she sees Joe, she asks him if Ginny could work there. Although Joe is reluctant at first, he eventually gives in and lets her work at Blue Farm.
At the Sophomore Sleepover, Joe asks Georgia to help him hand out to the students. When Georgia accidentally spills some mustard on her sweater, Joe is quick to help her and tells her ‘Don’t cry over spilled condiments’, a direct quote from their earlier interaction as teenagers.
Throughout the season, Joe is seen running the business at Blue Farm and helping Ginny when necessary at her new job. When Joe catches an awkward interaction between Ginny and Marcus at the register, she sarcastically asks Ginny not to be so passive-aggressive towards the customers.
When Georgia comes to the restaurant, they have an interaction where they discuss things about their lives. Georgia is visibly shocked when she hears that Joe has a horse named Milkshake, which was again a direct reference to their interaction as teenagers. Georgia asks Joe if he’s willing to come to her Casino Night that evening, but Joe politely refuses, claiming he’s not the type of guy who wears suits. Georgia tells him that she wishes he’d come, claiming he’d look good in a suit. Joe ends up attending in a suit, much to Georgia's surprise.
When Georgia’s sister Maddie is in town, they go to Blue Farm together, hang out, and end up dancing with Joe. When they bring a drunk Maddie home, they carry her to bed together. After she’s in bed, they briefly romantically look at each other, until Paul quickly interrupts, and Joe leaves.
When Ginny leaves work one day, Joe recognizes her sunglasses as his own, which he had given to Georgia as a teenager. When Ginny explains the origin of how Georgia got them at a bus stop, he remembers their interaction fully, and as soon as he sees Georgia entering, he wants to declare his feelings for her and officially mention the sunglasses. Still, he is quickly interrupted by Ellen, who talks to Georgia about the engagement to Paul, leaving Joe saddened and walking off.
Season 2[]
At Thanksgiving, Georgia comes to pick up something for the Holiday, but she notices Cynthia entering and claims she looks terrible. Joe tells her to be kind as Cynthia is dealing with a dying husband, and proceeds to give Cynthia her order for free, which surprises Georgia.
When Ginny moves back in with Georgia, Georgia tells her that if she wants to eat after the previous evening of refusing to eat Georgia’s food, she should work and try to get her job back at Blue Farm. Joe is initially reluctant to give Ginny her job back after she bailed randomly for two months, but eventually gives in.
Joe agrees to have Blue Farm be where the talent night is hosted, and he attempts to make a little comedy segment, which doesn’t go as planned, but is laughed at by Cynthia, with whom he shares a kiss later that night, but Cynthia quickly regrets it and walks off. This results in a few awkward encounters with Cynthia.
On Christmas Evening, Georgia enters Blue Farm after seeing Joe all alone. Joe is surprised to see Georgia there, but she explains that her Christmas dinner didn't work out, and together they discuss an ideal Christmas and their families. Eventually, Georgia tells Joe that what she likes best about him is that she never feels judged by him. She hugs him and walks away, but not before noticing a little horse called Milkshake by the counter.
Later that night, Cynthia enters Blue Farm, and Joe and she sleep together that night, and spend some time together at the bar the following days as a result.
Joe lets Blue Farm be the location of Georgia’s bachelor party, but is visibly saddened at knowing Georgia is getting married soon, which is evident in their conversation near the end of the evening, which is interrupted by Ginny.
When Cynthia tells Georgia that she’s slept with Joe, Georgia is stunned. Later that evening, when Joe visits Georgia, she confronts him about it. Joe returns the Ray-Bans he gave her as teenagers and asks her at last if she knows what they are, expressing confusion about her motives. Georgia tells him she’s getting married and mentions that there’s nothing she hasn’t thought about, which upsets them both, leaving Joe disappointed. Georgia was lying down on her bed, visibly affected by their conversation.
Joe is seen attending Georgia and Paul’s wedding, but waiting in the lobby after the ceremony. He’s joined by Marcus, and they talk about why they really came to the wedding. Eventually, they decide to go upstairs. Marcus joins him at the wedding.
When Georgia is arrested and taken to the cop car by the arresting officers, he stands with the rest of the crowd, looking confused and shocked about what’s happening.
Season 3[]
The Monday after Georgia’s arrest, Joe is first seen making food in the back kitchen of Blue Farm, which he then brings over to Cynthia’s house. Cynthia thanks him for the food and breaks down in his arms. The next day, he goes to Georgia’s arraignment after she requested that he be there.
The day after Georgia’s arraignment, Cynthia goes to Blue Farm to return the dish with the food that Joe made for her and thanks him for going to her husband’s funeral the day prior. Then, when Joe goes into the back kitchen to put the dish away, he sees Ginny having a panic attack and helps her through it by giving her a glass of water and helping her onto a stool. He then tells Ginny that she can leave early.
On a different day, Paul comes into Blue Farm and Joe asks him about the potential threat of big businesses and chain restaurants being allowed into Wellsbury, but Paul is too focused on the murder trial to tell him anything about it. He then asks Paul how Georgia’s doing and tells him that he was with Georgia the night Tom was murdered, as this information could potentially be used as an alibi to prove Georgia’s innocence.
One day, while Ginny and Georgia are watching the town meeting on TV, they see Joe make a statement against Proposition 38, which is the motion that would allow big businesses to enter Wellsbury. Later on, Georgia organizes a neighborhood-wide event called Lawnfest to promote the town's small businesses and purposely pairs her house with Blue Farm, as she wants to talk to Joe and doesn’t understand why he hasn't been speaking to her. Due to Joe’s lingering romantic feelings for Georgia, however, he decides not to go to her house for the event in an attempt to avoid her and instead stays at Blue Farm, but then goes to her house later to pack up after the event is over. Georgia then sees him loading up his truck and asks him why he hasn’t spoken to her at all since her arrest, and he reminds her that he still has feelings for her and doesn’t see her as just a friend.
After Georgia’s trial starts, Paul gets drunk at Blue Farm and, when he tells Joe that he can't go home because his wife is a murderer, Joe tells him that he can't stay at Blue Farm. However, Paul is unable to walk straight, so Joe takes him to his office at City Hall and makes sure he’s settled on the couch before calling Georgia to let her know that Paul’s sleeping in his office. During their conversation, he also lets Georgia know that her trial is being broadcast via Wellsbury Local Access and tells her that he hopes she’s okay.
One day, when Paul and Zion are talking at Blue Farm, Joe overhears Paul say that Georgia doesn’t know how bad her murder trial looks and that she’s going to be terrified, which then prompts Joe to pay her a visit to make sure she’s okay. He brings over pie and Mario Kart and they play video games together, after which he asks her how she’s been. She then tells him that her father called her and that, according to her mother, he was arrested for attempting to murder her and her mother when she was six. After that, she thanks Joe for coming over, and when he asks her why she hasn’t told her lawyer that he and Cynthia were having an affair, she responds that she would never do that to him.
One afternoon, Joe overhears a conversation between Gil and Austin at Blue Farm in which Gil tells him that Georgia is unfit to take care of him. Later, Joe visits Georgia again and brings over a dinner of chicken and mac n’cheese. During their conversation, Joe asks her where Paul is and Georgia confirms that he has left her, and she also reveals to him that Gil physically abused her when they were together. Joe tells her that he values loyalty in relationships because he was cheated on by an ex, apologizes for the difficult situation Georgia’s going through, and jokingly agrees to her plan to leave Wellsbury and go to Canada together.
Another night, Joe visits Georgia a third time, but is drenched by the time he comes into her house because of the sprinkler system she has set up. After he takes off his shirt and she gives him a towel to dry himself off, she breaks down when telling him that Ginny didn’t turn out like her and starts crying on his chest. Joe hugs and comforts her, but after she stops crying, she tries to kiss him. Despite his feelings for her, he rejects her advances and tells her that he didn’t come to her house for that reason, as she has too much going on with her murder trial. He then puts his shirt back on and leaves.
Later, when Ginny is having dinner with Abby, Abby's father, and Abby's father’s girlfriend, Joe asks them how their food is and quickly picks up on the awkward vibe at the table. Ginny then goes over to Joe and he lets her know that Georgia told him about Gil’s abuse. This surprises Ginny, as her mother normally doesn’t share personal details like that with anyone. Then, when Ginny opens up to him about how her mother’s murder trial is making her feel, he reminds her that she has two loving parents, to which she tells him that “(he is) so babygirl.”
On another day, Joe is seen walking outside in the city center. Gil sees Joe walking in front of him and calls out to him, but when Joe realizes that it's Gil, he punches him in the face without saying a word.
After Paul officially announces that he will be divorcing Georgia, Joe visits her again, but she tells him that it’s not a good time. However, when she notices the bruises on his hand and realizes that he was the one who punched Gil, she kisses him. Joe then realizes that Georgia is about to leave town. To justify her decision, she explains to him that she can’t be a mother to her children in prison and tells him not to judge her again, as one of the things she loves about him is that he never judges her. She then tells him that she is leaving Wellsbury for good, and they have sex.
After Georgia turns herself in and is taken into custody, Joe visits her in prison and reminds her that she is not a bad person. He then tells her that he’ll see her again the next time he visits.
After Georgia is found not guilty of Tom’s murder, Joe and Paul have a conversation at Blue Farm in which Paul tells him that Georgia lied to him about being pregnant with his baby. He also reveals that he and Georgia slept together after getting back together, which worries and confuses Joe. Then, when Georgia and Ellen are having wine at Blue Farm, Georgia looks for Joe, but is unable to find him. When Padma tells them that Joe is cooking in the back, Georgia goes into the back kitchen to see him and ask about the status of their relationship. However, because of the approaching vote on Proposition 38, his confusion about how Georgia was found not guilty, and his skepticism about Georgia in response to what Paul told him, he and Georgia end up having a short, awkward conversation.
The next day, Joe is seen exiting City Hall after voting on Proposition 38 and hears people complaining about the loud drilling going on in the city center. He then asks one of the construction workers why they’re drilling, to which he responds that a blonde woman (Georgia) hired them to drill there for a few hours. It is clear that Georgia did this to get people to vote against Proposition 38, as the entrance of big businesses into Wellsbury would lead to more loud construction.
That night, Joe visits Georgia at her house and asks her if Gil really did kill Tom, to which she responds that she was the one who killed him. Joe is visibly surprised upon hearing this, though he tells Georgia that he already suspected it. Georgia also confirms to him that most of the things that were said about her in the news are true, such as the fact that she killed two of her husbands. However, she also tells him that she feels safe and like the “real her” with him, and she also tells him that she’s not asking anything of him as far as their relationship is concerned. Joe is relieved upon hearing this and tells her that he’s not expecting anything of her either, but he then kisses her. Georgia also reveals that she killed Tom to help Cynthia and that Ginny and Austin lied for her, and Joe tells her that he understands and that he doesn’t care about the fact that she has murdered people. They then kiss again, but Georgia apologizes and tells him that, because she hasn’t stopped going from guy to guy, she needs to be alone for a little while to be there for her children, especially since she promised Ginny she'd be different. They then hug.

Georgia[]
Joe met Georgia back when they were teenagers at a bus stop in Georgia, moments after Georgia found out she was pregnant, whilst Joe and the rest of his class were taking a stop during a school trip underway to Fort Jackson. Despite their interaction being brief, both appear to have remembered it which is made clear when they encounter each other years later in Wellsbury, accompanied by the fact that Joe gave Georgia his Ray-Ban sunglasses which Georgia has always kept and according to Ginny claims is the nicest thing she’s ever owned, given to her by ‘someone at a bus station’, meaning Joe. However, they seem to like each other, as neither seems to recall exactly if they had met before. Combined with Georgia quickly getting into a relationship with Paul upon her arrival in Wellsbury, they never become an actual couple. Still, there have been multiple times where both have seemed to be close to confessing their feelings for each other, and even other people (like Maddie, Georgia’s sister) have noticed chemistry between them.
